If the message says: send to this many people its SPAM. Don’t send it.

Your password and username is your identity! You can’t possibly share it.

Is your computer saying the file cannot be trusted? Do not execute the file, trust your computer.

If the website promise to protect and make your computer faster, it’s a trap. Do not install the application. Just call IT.

Is your computer slower than expected? Call IT, it could be a virus.

Inspect Links

Banks will never request your password via email.

Untrusted Sources

Don’t open email or attachments from untrusted sources.

Strong Passwords

Enable passwords on all devices: laptops, mobiles and tablets.

Protect Data

Back-up your data. Always put important files in FILR.

Log Off

Do NOT check ‘Keep Me Logged In’ or ‘Remember Me’

Only turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you need.

How to spot spam

Spam emails may feature some of the following warning signs:

  • You don’t know the sender.
  • Contains misspellings (for example ‘p0rn’ with a zero) designed to fool spam filters.
  • Makes an offer that seems too good to be true, such as Lotto, inheritance or SARS payouts.
  • The subject line and contents do not match.
  • Contains an urgent offer end date (for example “Buy now and get 50% off”).
  • Contains a request to forward an email to multiple people, and may offer money for doing so.
  • Contains a virus warning.
  • Contains attachments, which could include .exe files.

How to keep your children safe

  • Explain that online friends are really strangers.
  • Tell them never to meet an online friend in person.
  • Make them aware that adults sometimes pretend to be children to lure them into meetings.
  • Never send a picture of themselves to anyone they don’t know.
  • Never give out their name, address, phone number or school name.
  • Don’t enter private chat rooms. Use public ones with a monitor.
  • Do not download pictures or files from anyone they don’t know.
  • Ignore and report any messages that are pin-pointed, suggestive, obscene or harassing.
